Efficacy of Fluoride Toothpaste
Five Decades of data demonstrate efficacy of fluoride toothpaste
(From American Dental Association News, January 15, 2003.)

The review of 74 studies conducted between 1950 and 2001 in the Americas, Europe and Asia involving more than 42,000 subjects under age sixteen found that regular brushing with fluoridated toothpaste results in 24 percent fewer cavities than brushing with non-fluoridated toothpaste. In addition, brushing with a fluoride toothpaste at least once a day reduces caries—even if children live in areas with fluoridated water supplies; brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste confers greater caries reduction than brushing once a day or less; and using a fluoride toothpaste may confer greater caries benefit in children and adolescents with higher baseline levels of decayed, missing and filled teeth.

For cavity protection; therefore, children should use fluoridated dentifrices. However, use small amount of toothpaste in small children who can swallow toothpaste to avoid overdose of fluoride.

Orthodontics With No Brackets, No Wires!

With the advent of computer technology in dentistry, now orthodontists can move teeth with clear plastic trays customarily made to fit the teeth. The clear benefits of these new appliances, called “Invisalign,” are
1. Invisible. No one can tell that you are wearing braces.
2. Removable. You can eat and brush as usual when removing the appliance.
3. No irritation from brackets or wires.

After an initial examination, your orthodontist will make a diagnosis and plan for Invisalign if the appliance is suitable for you. A detailed impression of your teeth will be used to create a series of clear plastic appliances using the latest technology in 3-D computer imaging. You then wear each set of appliances full-time, except for eating and brushing, and visit your orthodontist every 4-6 week for check the progress. Your teeth will gradually move to the desired position. The treatment usually lasts about 12-18 months.
